On 28 October 2021, the CESNI adopted its work programme for the next three years. The various topics involving technical requirements, professional qualifications and information technologies, which are CESNI’s three main areas of work, were discussed in depth and resulted in an ambitious multi-year work programme (2022-2024).
With this steering instrument, CESNI commits to regularly revise existing standards and to adopt new standards so as to maintain and guarantee the high level of safety of European inland navigation, in particular regarding technical requirements for vessels and professional qualifications. With this instrument, the Committee also commits to follow closely technical evolutions and support innovation, including alternative fuels, automation and modern tools for training and examination, as well as support digitalisation of inland navigation. The CESNI also foresees several actions to encourage the proper implementation of standards, including consultations on the uniform interpretation and publication of explanatory documents. Lastly, the CESNI is ready to provide advice and analysis on priority topics regarding safe and sustainable inland navigation in view of possible future regulatory developments.
The resulting ambitious multiannual work programme (2022-2024), based on the strategic guidelines drawn up by DG MOVE and the CCNR Secretariat, is the outcome of discussions among all CESNI’s participants representing inland navigation: Member States of the CCNR and of the European Union, Observer States, the European Commission, a number of international organisations, including river commissions, and representative non-governmental organisations.
